Rebuilding Security in New Syria: Year 2, Week 36
Tracking the spread of new security forces and security incidents in post-Assad Syria from August 10 to August 16
Announcements of security deployments mostly in western Syria, with an emphasis on the minority regions. This weekly update is intended to provide base level data for more holistic research into the rebuilding of the security and governance structures of post-Assad Syria. Killings continue to occur across the country, targeting men from every sect over a range of motivations including land disputes and sectarian killings. At least four men were murdered this week under such motivations in Hama, Homs, and Aleppo, while other theft-related murders also occurred. This week also saw sharp social media outcry over the death of a Civil Defense volunteer in Latakia following his beating by police officers inside the Haffeh Police Jail.
Ministry of Interior units continue to arrest criminal gangs involved in theft and kidnappings. ISC units also responded to protests in Kobani early this week following attacks on Kurdish IDP convoys in Hasakah’s Ras al-Ain. The Ministry also announced that 6 of the men arrested in Quneitra last week on charges of belonging to ISIS were to be released after it was determined they had no affiliations with the organization.
