The city of Qadmus in Syria’s Tartous governorate is largely Ismaili, surrounded by Alawite villages. Like Salamiyah, the Ismailis of Qadmus have built a close relationship with the new government. They have also used this privileged position to act as intermediaries with the local Alawite villages - both before and after the March 6 uprising. Yesterday I interviewed a civil society member in Qadmus. We discussed the security developments since December 8, the situation in the city during the recent violence, and the current security situation and the stark difference between the police and General Security and the pro-government military factions in the area.
